what is c,mm,n
C,mm,n is an open source community for sustainable personal mobility. In our c,mm,nity, people with a creative, intelligent and enterprising perspective on mobility issues are working together to develop not just a new type of car, but a whole new mobility concept. C,mm,n offers a mobility solution for the future.
The c,mm,nity is a growing community, with over 800 people involved at present and about 80 of those making active contributions.
latest developments
Right now, the c,mm,nity is hard at work on:
- roll-out strategy: "1 million electric cars in 2020"
- quick charge points
- optimal charge points
- interior design
- floor plate/suspension
- powertrain
- intelligent systems/driving simulator
- virtual Amsterdam
- setting up and inmproving the webplatform
open source
The path to truly sustainable mobility is the open source concept. Just like open source software, the product is 'open to all.' The c,mm,n car blueprint and the c,mm,n mobility concepts are freely available under an open source licence. This allows the whole world to take part in the development of truly sustainable mobility. Everyone is free to use and modify the design. The only condition is that any resulting derived designs are returned to the c,mm,nity as open source. We believe that the best results are achieved through cooperation.
As with other open source products like software, you can use c,mm,n to offer your own services. You can base your own mobility services around c,mm,n, for example to offer your clients a lease or rental car or provide transportation or other mobility-related services.
If you also want to be a part of sustainable mobility solutions or take a hand in designing c,mm,n, visit the get involved page.
different design
Generally, any new generation of car builds on existing models. Refinements in design result in a new car that surpasses its predecessor in all aspects: bigger, more powerful, safer and better-looking.
C,mm,n abandons this working method completely. The concept of the development of c,mm,n is built around the society of the future, with the needs of the mobilist of 2020 in mind.
the origins of c,mm,n
In 2005, the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment approached the universities of technology in the Netherlands with the request to produce a sustainable mobility concept for the year 2020. TU Eindhoven, TU Delft and the University of Twente accepted the challenge.
Almost immediately, industry parties took an interest and got involved, with Athlon Car Lease in the forefront, in the drive to present a realistic and forward-looking concept. The shared vision of the future of mobility was presented at Amsterdam's automotive industry trade show AutoRAI in 2007. But rather than being the end of a development process, the presentation of c,mm,n at AutoRAI was in fact the beginning. C,mm,n invited all interested parties to contribute to the c,mm,nity. A group very quickly emerged, and that group is still the core of the c,mm,nity. Today there are hundreds of people using the c,mm,n philosophy in some way to work towards our c,mm,n future.
future vision
When thinking about sustainability, the first thing to realise is that it is a concept that is about the long term. Firstly, changing patterns of behaviour takes time. And development and production processes can take years, if not decades. In some cases, new technologies may still have to be invented. This is why c,mm,n set the year 2050 as the target date for the sustainable society. Because with such a long time frame in front of you, it is easy to lose track of time and let progress slide, c,mm,n is focusing on the date of 2020 as a sort of "pre-finish line" that, while not the end, is still an important moment to show progress on the way towards 2050.
Rather than looking back at yesterday's cars, the c,mm,n mobility concept starts by looking forward to the people of tomorrow.
