So how can one make money out of open source?

The easiest way to answer this is: look at Linux. Linux is an open source operating system for computers. Nothing more than an idea, when you look at it. It's abstract (code) and available to all. It's what you do with it after you download it, that can make you money. A Linux distributor will take the Linux code, sharpen it up, add some components they think their clients will want, and sell it as a service package. The money they make is not on the software development, but on the distribution and on the services around it. c,mm,n mobility products are similar to this, the difference being that they can be solid objects which are developed open source. You might compare making money on solid objects with mobile phone operators. They make money on the services around the phone: voice services, SMS, e-mail, games, ringtones, internet access. Not on the devices themselves. They usually don't even produce these themselves. When you sell a c,mm,n mobility product, you could be (for instance) leasing people mobility. Or a place in a fuel-efficient platoon. Or guaranteed parking spaces wherever they go. Whatever you can imagine, or whatever developed idea you wish to start making into reality.
